StateDate
4? 1913 View
5 1916 View
6 1916 View
State 4?, (1913) 20.30 x 9.80 (cm)
State Notes: The designation as State 4? is arbitrary since the artist's notes do not provide any insight beyond saying that in March 1916 the figure was removed in State 5.

With the current information one can only conclude that this is State 4 or earlier.
Edition 4?a (1913 )
sheet size: 24.50x16.70(cm) Edition Size: ?
Edition Notes: Prior to the figure of the woman in the lower left being removed in State 5.

24.5 x 16.7 cm appears to be full sheet size. Another copy of the identical image was viewed with margins cut down. No pencil notations on either copy.
Paper Type: no distinct texture to the paper, no laid lines visible.
Watermark: none apparent
State 5, (1916) 20.30 x 9.80 (cm)
State Notes: Artist's notes indicate: "5th state - 4 prints - Mar 1916 figure removed"

It would appear that the artist removed (burnished?) the female figure in the middle foreground and then added lines to fill in and darken the space.
The 4 prints in this state appear to be a result of the artist making changes, pulling one proof and then making further changes. The prints in State 5 are numbered 1/4 to 4/4 and reveal the progression as more lines were added to darken the space.
Edition 5a (1916 )
Edition Size: 1
Edition Notes: There is a pencil notation of "7" in the lower left margin but it is uncertain what this may refer to.

This copy (#1/4)of the image has significantly more age toning in the margins than the other 4 images that it appears to be the contemporary of.
In the lower left margin below the "7" there is a smudged pencil notation that appears to say "5th state 1/4" but the "5" is indistinct. See a similair pencil notation for Edition 5c (#3/4).
Paper Type: no distinct texture to the paper, no laid lines visible.
Watermark: none apparent
Edition 5c (1916 )
sheet size: 24.50x11.00(cm) Edition Size: 1
Edition Notes: Pencil notation lower left "5th state 3/4". The area where the woman was removed LL, is still a bit lighter than in the final published state.

Narrow side margins.
Paper Type: no distinct texture to the paper, no laid lines visible.
Watermark: none apparent
State 6, (1916) 20.30 x 9.80 (cm)
State Notes: final state; numbered 1 to 75 (eg 70/75) in pencil. Not all copies are pencil signed.
Edition 6a (1916 )
sheet size: 28.30x14.00(cm) Edition Size: 75
Edition Notes: One copy observed numbered in pencil "70/75" No pencil signature on this copy. A sheet size of 28.3 x 14.0 cm appears to be full margins.
Paper Type: no distinct texture to the paper, no laid lines visible.
Watermark: none apparent
